Current issue of Acta Musicologica

Not Yet a Member?

IMS members automatically receive a subscription to Acta. Being part of the IMS also has many more membership benefits (click here for details). The annual subscription price for non-members is €108.00.

You do not have to be a member of the International Musicological Society (IMS) to submit a paper to Acta Musicologica. However, we would be happy if you considered joining our society. Furthermore, submitting an article and having it published is free of charge. Nevertheless, we are happy to receive voluntary donations (click here to open the secure donation form).


Submitted papers must be original works, which have not previously been published in any form elsewhere. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., with the words “Manuscript for Acta Musicologica” included in the subject line. The recommended word-limit for submissions is 8,000 words (including notes and bibliography). Shorter articles are also welcome. The text must be submitted as a Microsoft Word file (.doc or .docx). Authors are asked to not enable reviewers to draw any conclusions about their name/authorship in the text.

Before you submit an article to Acta Musicologica, be sure to comply with our publication ethics! Upon manuscript submission, you affirm that your article and its contents have not been submitted to another journal and that the article has not been accepted for publication or published before. You also unconditionally guarantee that you have all appropriate and necessary rights and authorities to publish the texts, photos, images, and sheet music provided. Furthermore, you agree with the distribution of your content through platforms such as JSTOR, Project MUSE, and the like.


It is possible to submit texts in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish for publication in Acta. We strongly recommend submitting articles in your own native language. If yours is not included in the list given, please use a language connected with the topic of the article. If the language used is not your native one, you are required to arrange for language editing and proofreading prior to submission.


For all questions of style, please consult recent copies of Acta (vol. 89 or newer) and refer to the Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition (notes and bibliography): Chicago-Style Citation Quick Guide. To view a sample bibliography, click here. The editors reserve the right to return submissions that do not conform to these guidelines.


Figures must be placed within the document manuscript at the appropriate place (including captions) and attached as separate files (JPG, TIFF, PDF, or EPS; 300 dpi at 15 cm/6 inches in portrait format). PDF is the preferred file format for typeset music examples and tables. All figures are reproduced in black and white. Note that it is the author’s responsibility to secure the permission to reproduce any material in copyright.

Abstract and Biography

All research articles have to be supplied with a structured abstract, keywords, and a short biography (all in English). The abstract describes the purpose, value, approach, and results of the article. It should not exceed 200 words, conforming to the RILM Guidelines. Please also provide an English article title and three to five keywords with your abstract. The English biography should not exceed 100 words.
